Current Style Registrations
When the DVLA were heading towards the end of the prefix registrations in the late 1990's they had to come up with another scheme and option for number sin the middle of the registration. Because the Y prefix was released in March 2001, the first release of the new style was September 2001 and the DVLA opted to make it easy to tell whether a vehicle was registered in March or September by using numbers 2 to 50 for March and 51 to 99 for September. So the first release under the new scheme was September 2001 and it was 51, followed by 02 for March 2002 and 52 for September 2002. The current style are two letters, then the 2 digit number for year, followed by 3 letters - its the first time that we've had 5 letters in a plate.
